Nearly one out of ten Americans live with diabetes(1). Let's examine the importance of medication adherence in patients with diabetes.
A recently published report(2) found that commercially insured patients who were adherent to their oral diabetes medications underwent significantly fewer emergency room visits and inpatient hospitalizations, and spent nearly $500 less on total healthcare costs compared to non-adherent patients, potentially avoiding more than $210 million in healthcare spending in 2016.
In addition to medications, managing diabetes involves several strategies including routine, diet, and lifestyle habits. A useful online resource for tools and tips can be found here.
