Pharmacist's Corner: What should I do if my Doctor is adjusting my doses or meds?

Medicines can change, sometimes right after you refill your prescription. Sticking with your med schedule every day allows your doctor to assess if your dose is the right dose to keep you safe and healthy!   Here are a couple tips for what to do if your doctor is adjusting doses or meds:

  • Let your doctor know if you've changed how you're taking the medicine or if you've forgotten to refill it.
  • Ask if you can finish your current bottle. Sometimes it may not be an issue or it may be really important that you switch right away!
  • Your pharmacist is a great resource to know if you can split the pills or come up with ways to get your new dose with your current supply.
  • If you aren't able to use the rest of your med supply and your doctor doesn't think you will be going back onto the med, you should dispose them to minimize the risk of taking them accidentally or them getting into the wrong hands. There are a few options when it comes to disposing of meds. Check out this link for information on "mixing and pitching" as well as any special requirements for specific medications.
